Product Feature: Captain America-The First Avenger

It seems that this year is the summer of super heroes and blockbuster hits!  And we all know with great movies, come great toys.  While Marvel Studios brings super hero action to the theaters, Hasbro helps you bring the adventure home with an impressive selection of toys, giving kids more ways than ever to re-enact the actions of their favorite Marvel super heroes (including Thor, Iron Man and Spider Man).

Earlier this spring, Marvel Studios released Thor.  In July, Captain America: The First Avenger will storm theaters nationwide.

CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER showcases Steve Rogers, a brave yet mild-mannered young World War II soldier who volunteers to undergo a series of experiments for a U.S. Army “Super Soldier” program.  Adorned in his iconic red, white and blue helmet and indestructible shield, Captain America fights for his nation by battling his archenemy Red Skull and, in the process, becomes The First Avenger.

To help you anticipate the movie, I want to share a few cool toys that you don’t want to miss.

Captain America Action Figures

Captain America action figures are about 3.75″ tall and are highly detailed – great for play or collection.  These action figures feature a variety of characters, each belonging to either the movie, concept or comic series.  These do contain small parts and are not appropriate for kids under 4.  Action figures retail starting at around $7.99.

Super Shield Captain America

The Super Shield Captain America stands about 10 inches tall and is a bit more playful (not as serious-looking) than some of the other action figures, which makes it great for younger kids.  He features more than 10 electronic phrases (some with sound effects) from the movie, which is prompted by pressing the star on his chest.  Not only does he speak, the star on his shield also lights up.  One of my favorite phrases is, “Rise and shine, soldiers!”  The morning I decided to present the toy to my 4 year old son, I played it for him as his wake-up call.  My sleepy-head son didn’t wake up to me saying, “Wake up!” but boy did he jump when Captain America commanded it!  The Super Shield Captain America requires 2 AA batteries (included!) and retails for about $24.99 (available in stores now).

Captain America Hero Mask

Kids can enhance their role-playing experience by instantly transforming into a super hero with Captain America’s Hero Mask, just like Steve Rogers when in battle.  The Hero Mask is based on the design from the movie and seems fairly durable.  It’s comfortable to wear (my kids didn’t complain when putting it on and were able to wear it for a good amount of time) and has an adjustable Velcro strap in back to help secure the mask in place.  I prefer this design over a mask that you have to slip on over your head as some kids don’t like that and can get uncomfortable.  The Hero Mask is geared for those ages 5 and up.  It retails for about $7.99 and is available in stores now.

Also in Hasbro’s Captain America line-up that I think is a perfect accompaniment to the Hero Mask is the Disc Launching Shield.  Captain America’s signature battle weapon is a must for role-playing, whether you’re a fan or not.  The Disc Launching Shield fires miniature foam disks to defend against combatants (or siblings-not that I’m encouraging any fighting between them!)  The shield has a diameter of 15 inches and comes with five foam discs; it retails for about $19.99.  If you aren’t a fan of the shooting discs, Hasbro also has the Flying Shield.  This shield is slightly smaller, about 10 inches in diameter, and resembles more like a frisbee (thus, “flying” shield-but please be careful when playing indoors!); it has a stretchy band in back as a handle which I think is a better design than if it had a plastic handle.  The Flying Shield is constructed of sturdy plastic and does not require batteries!  It retails for about $7.99.

This is just a sampling of the exciting toys Hasbro offers; for more information about any of Hasbro’s Captain America-The First Avenger toy line-up, please visit their website.
